A Fairfield relations in jewelry and fine silverware, charged with ripping off nearly $90,000 from customers, was granted a conduct of probation Tuesday.

Over the objections of the prosecutor, Superior Court Rate Robert Devlin granted accelerated rehabilitation to 52-year-old Alastair Crawford , of Threatening Rock Turnpike, on charges of first-degree and third-degree larceny.

Under accelerated rehabilitation, Crawford, a British voter, did not plead guilty to the charges, but was placed on two years probation. If he commits no other crimes during that probation the primeval charges against him will be dismissed.

Senior Assistant State's Attorney Robert Brennan opposed granting accelerated rehabilitation to Crawford. He argued the offence was too serious and there is no guarantee Crawford won't do it again.

But the judge said he gives Crawford tribute for making total restitution to his victims, and also was persuaded by Crawford's legal practitioner, Robert Golger , that the thefts were caused by his failing business.
