A few days after the phone conversation, Maultsby, an Air Pressure veteran himself, pulled the tarnished sterling silver bracelet engraved with “Jefferson W. Maultsby, U.S.M.C” from his mailbox.

For more than 60 years, the bracelet was in a reminder box belonging to U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Ed Schellhase's father, who served side-by-side in conflict with 1st Lt. Jefferson W. Maultsby in I Company.

Earlier this month, Schellhase of Norwalk, Iowa, dug through a casket of war artifacts that belonged to his recently deceased father, Ed Schellhase Sr.

That is where Schellhase found the bracelet that was once clamped around the wrist of Maultsby's uncle. In the souvenir box, he also found a muster sheet listing the names of his father and Maultsby's uncle.

“I do not conscious for sure,” Schellhase said. “But I would bet my father removed the ID bracelet from (Maultsby) after he perished to bar the enemy from taking it.
